Augustus Julius Zech was born in Germany. He was living in Victoria, Australia, at the time of the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92. He won a special first award for his display of 'handsome novelties in the form of revolving stars in pins and brooches' in the Victorian Court at the Exhibition. Mr Zech also exhibited amber jewellery in the Avenue of Nations for which he received a first award.
By 1897 Mr Zech was in Sydney where he established his business AJ Zech & Co, importers of glass, china and silver-plated ware. His residence was called 'Stuttgart', in Douglas Street, Randwick, NSW, but he later moved to Belmont Road, Mosman. By 1913 he was running a wine bar at 179 George Street, Sydney.
