Ernest Russell William Valentine, known as Rus, was born at 'Frodsley' in the Fingal Valley on 29 Sep 1873. He was the eldest son and third child of William Henry Valentine (1845-1931) and his wife Constance Ransom (1847-1894), who are both pictured in the Family Album.
Ernest played with the Launceston Football Club and Cornwall Cricket Club. He was a 42-year-old sports manager when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. Wounded in France while serving as a corporal in the 12th Battalion, he was subsequently transferred to the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column and was promoted to bombardier. He was demobilised in 1919 and later became an active member of the Launceston Sub-Branch of the RSL. Rus died at Cosgrove Park, Launceston, on 31 May 1959, aged 85.
