George Bates Thurstun was the only son of John Edward (1847-1928), a butcher and later involved in mining, and Elizabeth Esther Thurstun (1848-1917). Born in 1869, in the village of Hamstreet, parish of Orlestone, Kent, England, George came to Launceston with his parents on the Kent in Jan 1880 when he was 9 years old. He was a carpenter with J & T Gunn, then was employed in the Electric Light Department with the Launceston City Council until his last illness. He was a member of the Rechabite Order, a fancier of cage birds and was well-known as a bowler. George was a bass in the Tasmanian Exhibition Choir in 1891-92 with his cousin Llewellyn Thurstun.
George married Hannah (Anna) Delia Waldon on 27 Jan 1897 at the Invermay residence of G Fisher. They had four children: Gwendoline, 1898; Raymond, 1899-1900; Maxwell, 1905 and Geoffrey, 1906-1987. George died aged 57 on 21 Dec 1927. His wife Anna died aged 72 in Jul 1944 and was buried with her husband at the Carr Villa Cemetery in Section E2 No. 110. George's first cousin Llewellyn and uncle Frank Thurstun are pictured in the Family Album. The surname is sometimes spelt Thurston or Thurstan.
