Frank Thurstun was born at Orlestone, Kent, England, on 3 Mar 1867, the youngest son of Robert, a grocer and draper, and Ann Thurstun. He had older brothers John Edward, Albert and William Bass and a sister Eliza (who married Henry T Vernon). He arrived in Launceston in Feb 1880 on the ship Kent with several members of his extended family.

Frank worked in Launceston, Tasmania, for about 40 years as a law clerk. In 1926 he became a guide, lecturer and attendant at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. He was a member of a Masonic order and a keen student of natural history, especially bush life. He was also interested in art and showed an aptitude for oil painting. He died on 10 Sep 1930 aged 63 and was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery in Section B11 No 44. Two of Frank's nephews are also pictured in the Family Album: George and Llewellyn Thurstun. The surname is sometimes spelt Thurston or Thurstan.
