John Henry Taylor was born on 17 Nov 1854 in the Lincolnshire village of South Elkington near Louth, England. Not wanting to go into his father's milling business, he moved to London and then Southampton, working as a draper's assistant. In the latter, he met Emma Helen Miles, marrying her on 22 Jul 1885 before migrating to Tasmania.
He and his wife had six children in Launceston between 1886 and 1897. After working for Perrins as a draper, John established florist and seed businesses as well as Taylor's Nursery in conjunction with Frank Walker on the corner of Brisbane and Charles streets. John died at his residence 'Saxlingham', Trevallyn, on 13 Sep 1940 in his 86th year and was buried at Carr Villa Cemetery next to his wife Emma who had died on 19 Mar 1929 (Section B9 Nos 290-291).
