Leslie Jefferis Tarlton was born in South Australia in 1877, the seventh child of Robert Alfred Tarlton (1828-1918) and his second wife Sophia Walters Turner. He began his secondary education at EA Nathan's Launceston High School in Frederick Street in 1889. Samples of his penmanship were displayed at the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92.
Most of the Tarlton family moved to South Africa in 1893. Leslie fought in the Boer War, then in 1903, with his brother Henry and Vic Newland, established a safari business in Nairobi, Kenya, the first in Africa. Leslie was a fine horseman and an excellent rifleshot. He led US President Roosevelt's Kenya Safari in 1909-1910 and in the 1930s organised a safari for the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. Leslie married Jessie Wright of Barrow-in-Furness, England, in 1909. After retiring from Newland, Tarlton & Co. the couple farmed a smallholding in Limuru, Kenya. It appears that at the age of 64, on 16 Jun 1941 during the Second World War, Leslie was appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Sudan Defence Force. He died about 1950.
