Alice Mary Dennis Rock was born at Deloraine on 5 Jan 1862, a daughter of Dr Dennis Rock and his wife Grace Vosper who came from Victoria in 1855. Dr Rock practised medicine, was a justice of the peace, a coroner and lay reader at St Mark's Church. Alice had five siblings: Hedley Dennis, 1858-1927, a surveyor; Vosper, 1859-1862; Claude William, 1863-1950, a good cricketer, brilliant scholar and teacher; Norman Vosper, 1864-1945, also a good cricketer and owner of the butter factory in Deloraine; and Nina Grace Agnes, 1865-1957, a notable tennis player.
Mrs Rock, Alice and Nina moved to Launceston after the death of Dr Rock. Grace Rock died at her residence in Balfour Street on 4 Jan 1910. Five weeks later, on 10 Feb 1910 at St Paul's Church, Launceston, Alice married surveyor John Arnold Sorell, the eldest surviving son of Hugh Percy and Dora Forbes Sorell. They moved to Wagga Wagga, NSW, and Alice died there in 1943. John died in Hobart five years later. See The Examiner 18 Nov 2006, page 35.
