Norman Whyte Ritchie was born in Launceston on 28 Oct 1873, the eighth of ten children born to David Ritchie (1829-1920), JP of 'Scone Mills', Perth, and his wife Mary Amelia Anstice. Norman was christened on 9 Apr 1874 at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Launceston. He married Mary (Molly) Durant at the same church on 12 Mar 1919. Richard was Molly's child from a previous marriage. He was born in South Africa to Archibald Durant (d. 1918) and Molly (nee Denne). There was a granddaughter, Denise.
Norman was employed as a miller, merchant and salesman. He was a handy cricketer, playing with the Launceston Cricket Club from 1891 to 1893 and again from 1899 to 1905. During this time he played in four premierships and represented the North of the state. Norman died aged 90 at the Launceston General Hospital on 26 Sep 1964. His residence was 6 College Street. He was buried at Carr Villa in the monumental Section F No. 156.
