Harry Joseph Tilley Pybus was born on 8 Dec 1870, the second of 13 children born to William Bruni Pybus (1839-1914) and Fanny Tilley who married in 1865. He grew up in the Esperance area of Tasmania. Harry joined the public service in the Electric Telegraph Department as an operator in Launceston on 19 Jan 1891. He married Estelle Clare Thrower on 10 Jul 1897 at the residence of the bride's parents, William and Marian Thrower, 'Saxlingham', Trevallyn. They had two children: Doreen Estelle on 17 Apr 1898 and Reginald Clare (Pat) on 13 Aug 1899. Estelle died aged 25 just one week after the birth of her son, on 20 Aug 1899.

Harry married again on 8 Sep 1913 at St John's Church, Launceston, to Ilma da Costa. They did not have any children. Harry and Ilma lived in Hobart, Zeehan, Burnie and Deloraine. He was deputy postmaster in Burnie and, when he became ill after his transfer to Deloraine, Harry retired to Burnie. He died suddenly at his residence at 25 Jones Street on 26 Nov 1947. He was cremated at Carr Villa, Launceston. He had been active in sporting circles. He was secretary of the Launceston Football Club, the Lefroy Football Club and the Tamar Cricket Club. In Hobart he was instrumental in the formation of the Mercantile Rowing Club. He was also a keen bowls player. His future brother-in-law Samuel Campbell is also pictured in the Family Album.
