Stephen Frederick Piper was born in the Port Sorell district on 24 Jan 1869. He was the eldest son of John Piper (1840-1927), later a storekeeper and justice of the peace, and his wife Ellen Hardstaff who were married in 1868. Others in the family were John Alexander, Ernest, Catherine Maria, Ellen Mabel, Ada Fanny and Alice May. After the family moved to Launceston by 1879 John Piper had a grocery and glassware store at 46 Wellington Street.
Stephen was a journalist who was connected with the press in Tasmania, Western Australia and New South Wales. He played for the Press team in an Exhibition cricket match in Jan 1892. Stephen died suddenly aged 40 in Sydney on 21 Jun 1909. His sister Catherine also appears in the Album.
