Francis Stewart Pictet was born on 4 Jun 1866 in Bath, England, a son of Captain Francis Pictet, an officer in the Indian Army, and his wife Rose Pinsep Arnot, formerly MacKenzie. Francis Stewart was educated at the Naval School, Deptford, Kent. He came to Australia in 1884, aged 18. He was a prominent cricketer, a right-hand batsman who played for the Esk and Tamar Clubs, and represented Tasmania in 1897-98 against Victoria. He was also treasurer of the Northern Tasmanian Cricket Association in 1898-99. Francis was the manager of the Bank of Australasia in Devonport.
Francis left Tasmania around 1900 and moved to New South Wales. By 1930 he was retired and living with his wife Minnie Pryce at 'Redruth', Blaxland Road, Wentworth Falls. Francis died at Katoomba on 9 Mar 1947 and Minnie died in Sydney in 1959. His unusual surname is of Swiss origin.
