Mrs Winifred Murrell was born on 16 Oct 1858 at Mt Torrens, South Australia, to James Cox and his wife Mary Branch. She had at least two younger siblings: Mary born in 1860 and John born in 1863. Winifred Cox married Alfred Murrell in Victoria in 1877. Alfred was from Stoke Newington, England. Their first three children were born in Hobart: Sydney, 1879; Marjorie, 1880 and Raymond, 1881. Their youngest child was born in Launceston in 1885. Alfred was the secretary of the Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society.
At the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92 Winifred exhibited a cone frame in the fancy work category and some preserved fruits and jams. By 1903 the Murrells had moved to Melbourne, Victoria. Winifred died aged 62 in 1921 at Hawthorn. Alfred died the same year at Dandenong.
