This is possibly John Giles Martin, born at 11 Albert Street, Launceston, on 12 Jan 1870, the fifth son of Archibald Martin (1830-1904), bootmaker, and his wife Margaret Boyd. His parents, both Presbyterians, arrived in Tasmania in 1866 from Maybole, Ayreshire, Scotland. John, a storeman, married Margaret Phyllis (Maggie) Smith on 7 Mar 1900 in a Catholic ceremony at the residence of the bride's mother, 40 Charles Street, Launceston. Maggie's parents were James Smith, a carpenter, and Margaret Halloran who married in 1859.
John and Maggie had four children, all born in Launceston: Eileen Muriel, 1901-1923; Vera Sybil, 1902-1953; Noel Stanley, 1903-1979 and Claude Giles, 1905-1954. John died aged 63 on 8 Oct 1933 at the residence of his son Noel, 33 Connaught Crescent, Launceston. He was buried privately at the Carr Villa Cemetery in the Presbyterian Section F2 No. 433. Maggie had died the previous year on 17 May 1932 and was buried in the Catholic Section of Carr Villa.
