William Maltman, from Langholm, Scotland, was born in 1845. When he first came to Tasmania he worked as a weaver at the newly-opened Waverley Woollen Mills. He later was the publican of a number of different hotels in Launceston: Caledonian Inn (1881-1885), Club Hotel (1885-1887), and the Duke of Wellington Hotel (1888-1896). He was a member of the Cornwall Lodge and the Bowling Club and was involved in coursing.
On 24 May 1878 he married Maria Anderson Boag, the second surviving daughter of the brewer James Boag I. The marriage took place at the residence of the bride's father. They had three children: William Bole, Oct 1879, died 18 days later; Janet Swan, Oct 1880 and Elizabeth Bole, May 1882. William died aged 52 on 14 Feb 1897 and was buried in the Scotch Cemetery, Launceston. Maria died on 1 Oct 1914. Maria and one daughter are also pictured in the Launceston Family Album.
