William Leonard Maddox, known by his second name, was born in Launceston on 27 Dec 1876, the fifth child of Dr William Gordon Maddox (1844-1916) and his wife Maria Grace Schultze (c.1849-1889). He started at the Launceston High School, Frederick Street, in 1885. In his youth he was a fine footballer and good half-mile runner. William worked in a Launceston bank before living at Cormiston on the West Tamar for many years. Later, he conducted a milk delivery business in Launceston. He died aged 66 on 30 Apr 1942. He was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery in Section F No. 605. See The Examiner 27 May 2006, p.34.
