Austin Loughnan was the youngest son of Captain John Michael Loughnan, of the 10th Bengal Cavalry, who died 20 Sep 1875, and Marion Ness. Three siblings were born in Hobart: Margaret Isabella, 1838; George Cumberlege, 1842-1896 and Aubert Andrew, 1843. Austin was born in Victoria and was educated at St Patrick's College. He worked in a bank, and later managed his father's station 'Hunthawang' on the Lachlan River, NSW. He was also a station manager at 'Morton Plains', near Bourke, NSW. He was a well-known cricketer and footballer.
Austin was appointed the manager of the Tasmanian Woolgrowers' Agency Company in Launceston in Nov 1891. He attended the Tasmanian Exhibition in that capacity and also played in cricket matches. He was presented with a handsome clock by the Agency on the occasion of his marriage to Eleanor Mary Stockley Hines on 6 Feb 1892 at St Ignatius' Church, Richmond, Victoria. Eleanor was the eldest daughter of Francis Patrick Hines and Eleanor Brewer. The couple had three children. Their daughter Eleanor was born at Yarra Flats in 1894. A son Francis was born on 23 Aug 1895 at 'Wyoming', Armadale Road, Armadale, Victoria. He died in 1964. A second son, George, was born on 19 May 1897, at Klori, Tamworth, and died in 1934. Austin Loughnan died on 9 Oct 1926 at his residence, 118 Orrong Road, Armadale, Victoria. His wife died aged 72 in 1929.
