Charles Edward Long was born in 1866 in Ballarat, Victoria, to James Long and his wife Mary Jane Wilcock. Charles was an artist and married Dora Alexandra Handasyde in 1888 in Ballarat. Dora, born in 1867 in Melbourne, was a daughter of Gilbert Handasyde and Dora Letitia Paterson.
Charles and Dora had five children. The first three were born in Melbourne: Keith Longwood, 1889; Gladys Mary, 1890 and Doris Minnie Helena in 1891. The family moved to Launceston, Tasmania, in that year and Charles purchased a season ticket to the Tasmanian Exhibition. Although not in the Exhibition Choir, Charles sang solos at concerts which were held in conjuction with the Exhibition.
Charles and Dora had another two children in Launceston. Eric Rowland Handasyde was born on 10 Jan 1893 and Vivienne Audrey Edith was born on 3 Oct 1894. However the last born died aged 15 weeks on 18 Jan 1895. The family returned to Victoria, where Charles died aged 67 in 1932. Dora passed away aged 82 in 1951.
