Florence Lay was born in Melbourne in 1875, one of eight children and the only daughter of John Lay (c.1845-1911) and Florence Bird (c.1848-1935) who were married in Victoria in 1871. John Lay had a chemist shop in George Street, Launceston, at the time of the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92. The family moved to Eaglehawk, near Bendigo, Victoria, a few years after the Exhibition.
Florence married Thomas Arthur Cottier Sayle, chemist, before 1903. In that year they were living at 264-266 High Street, St Kilda. Their son William Lamfield was born at St Kilda in 1905 and daughter Florence Osler was born at Sandringham in 1909. By 1936 Florence and Thomas were living at 398 New Street, Elsternwick. Thomas died aged 67 in Mildura and Florence died aged 84 in Brighton.
