Edith Marion Layton was born in England in 1872 to George William Layton (1849-1916) and his wife Ann Webster Read (1847-1897). The family migrated to Australia on the Orient in 1883 when Edith was 11 years old. She was the eldest of five children who came out from England; the others were George, Arthur, Emma and Florence. A brother and two sisters were born after their arrival: William, 1885-1887); Winifred , May-Dec 1888 and Ida, 1890. Their father George was employed by F & W Stewart for 11 years and was then a messenger with the Bank of Australasia for 14 years. He was involved with St John's Mission House, a labour of love which he attended most zealously. Miss ME Layton was a soprano in the Exhibition Choir in 1891-92.
On 29 Mar 1895 Edith married Henry William (Harry) Castley (1866-1941), an ironmonger, a son of George and Millicent Castley. The marriage took place at St John's Church, Launceston. The couple did not have any children. Harry's brother Alfred Castley is also pictured in the family Album.
Harry died aged 75 on 7 Apr 1941, and Edith died aged 70 just one year later on 5 Apr 1942. They were buried together at Carr Villa in the monumental section C10 No. 71.
