John Arthur Richard Larner, known as Arthur, was born in Mitcham, Surrey, England in 1869. He was the eldest son of John and Eliza Jane Larner of 'Thornton', Greenwich, England. Arthur had three brothers: Albert Victor, born 15 Dec 1870, Peckam, Surrey; William Charles, 1874, Boston, USA and Harry Elvin, 22 Dec 1879, Peckam, Surrey. The family came to Victoria about 1886, then Eliza and her four sons settled in Launceston about 1889.
On 17 Apr 1900 Arthur married Alice Muilton Harrison, the second daughter of Robert Harrison and Mary Fisher, at St John's Church, Launceston. They had six children in Launceston, including twins Richard and Arthur in 1911. Their youngest child was born in Victoria. After their marriage they lived at 33 Lyttleton Street and later at 126 Elphin Road, Launceston.
Arthur was employed as a clerk (1903) and later went into a short-lived partnership (Jun 1908-Apr 1909) as Larner, Meredith and Room, auctioneers, grain, seed, produce and general merchants. By Jul 1909 he had established his own business of J A Larner & Co.
By 1919 Arthur was the secretary of the Australian Wheat Board and was living at 'Egment', Campbell Street, Sandringham, Victoria. He later moved to South Australia where he was the manager of H C Sleigh which became Golden Fleece. Arthur died at Netherby on 15 Sep 1938 and was buried at the Mitcham Cemetery.
