Mrs Betty Knight (nee Hardey) was born in Dalton, England, in 1828. She married William Henry Knight in Halifax, Yorkshire, in Sep 1850. They came to Launceston from Huddersfield in the 1850s, and in 1860 W H Knight set up his successful business as millwright, boiler maker, iron and brass founder and engineer at Phoenix Works, 32 Wellington Road, Launceston. William Henry died on 24 Apr 1878. Their son William was apprenticed to his father and, following his father's death, managed the business assisted by his brother Henry, who died at the age of 24. William junior continued to manage the business in the interests of the estate and eventually purchased it in 1895. William junior was a commissioner at the Exhibition in 1891-92 and his photograph is in the ornate album which was presented to the Mayor, Samuel Sutton. Betty died at her residence 'Huddersfield Cottage' on 25 Nov 1893 aged 65. She was buried in the Charles Street General Cemetery. See The Examiner 10 Mar 2007, page 35.
