Robert Alexander Kidd was born on 28 Aug 1875, the eldest of six children of Alexander Kidd (1843-1923), from Scotland, and Emily Mary Smith (1841-1927) who married in Launceston on 17 Aug 1873. Robert's mother was a schoolmistress and his father Alexander was a carpenter, the son of a cabinet-maker, also Alexander. Robert married Charlotte Heazlewood on 27 Apr 1908 at St Mark's Church, Deloraine. The family lived at 69 Bourke Street and attended the Christ Church Congregational, Frederick Street. His grandfather had built the pulpit for St John's Square Independent Chapel (Milton Hall)and his father extended it. This is now in the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. The Rev. John West would have preached from this pulpit.
As a student at the Launceston High School, 16-year-old Robert was awarded a second place for Plain Penmanship in the School Exhibits section of the Tasmanian Exhibition of 1891-92. He died at Perth, Tasmania, on 1 Feb 1930 aged 54. Charlotte died on 21 Apr 1938 aged 59, and was buried with her husband at the Carr Villa Memorial Park in Section E 26.
Their daughter Rosalie (born 1909), a teacher, married Garth Pritchard in 1937 in Sydney. Their 26-year-old daughter Marjorie was killed tragically in May 1939 when she was returning from staying a few days in Deloraine and was being driven back to Launceston to take up her teaching appointment at St Giles Special School. Her death was the result of an accident with The Examiner delivery van. She was buried at Carr Villa in Section C11 No 45. Robert's parents and sister Emily are pictured in the Launceston Family Album.
