Charles Walter Joscelyne was born in 1845 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. His parents were Samuel Joscelyne (1802-1877) and his wife Elizabeth Sparrow (1812-1882). In 1853 Samuel sailed for Melbourne to try his luck on the goldfields. He later moved to Launceston and established a furniture warehouse in Charles Street and later St John Street. His wife and two children later joined him in Launceston. In 1869 Samuel built the organ for the Bothwell Church.
Charles Joscelyne married Mary Ann Gould in Launceston on 13 May 1868. They had ten children between 1869 and 1890. Charles was the agent for George Fincham, a Melbourne organ builder. He sang bass in the Exhibition Choir in 1891-92. Charles died aged 67 on 27 Nov 1911 at 3 Spencer Street, Launceston. He was buried at Carr Villa in the Anglican Section B 52. His wife Mary Ann died aged 68 on 24 Oct 1914 and was buried with him. See The Examiner 7 Jul 2007, page 35.
