James Dawson Johnston, born about 1858, was the second son of John F Johnston, BA, TCD, of Bothwell. James married Ida Grace Mason on 24 May 1883 at Longford. Their two children were born in Launceston: Vernon in 1884 and Eric in 1888.
James was a chemist and druggist, and exhibited toilet articles, Grecian hair restorer, pomades, freckle lotion, hair oils, cream of pearls, influenza cough mixture and nonpariel corn cure at the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92. He was an enthusiastic member of the South Launceston Bowling Club. James died aged 66 on 26 Feb 1924 at Launceston, and was buried at Carr Villa in Section E 241. His wife Ida and son Vernon are also pictured in the Launceston Family Album.
