Dr Walter Herbert Jermyn was born in Belfast (now Port Fairy), Victoria, in 1867 to Dr David Jermyn (1826-1892) and his wife Josephine Dittmar. His parents had migrated to Australia from Castlecove, Co. Kerry, Ireland. Walter obtained his medical qualifications in Melbourne in 1889 and 1890. He was appointed house surgeon at the Launceston General Hospital on 1 July 1891. In addition to his annual salary of 250 pounds he received quarters, rations, fuel and light. During his short time at the hospital Dr Jermyn was startled when an earth tremor caused a chimney to crash into his room. He resigned from the hospital in 1893 and left the colony. His son Roy was born in 1900 at Mil Lel, near Mt Gambier, South Australia. He married Euphemia Williams, daughter of Thomas Henry Williams, in Mt Gambier, South Australia on 11 Sep 1913. Walter was a widower when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces in World War I. He was a Captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps from 1915 to 1919. Dr Jermyn died at Heywood in Victoria in 1946 aged 79. See The Examiner 11 Nov 2006, page 33.
