Rosa Eleanor Hughes was born on 25 Nov 1871, a daughter of Stephen Hughes and Maria Eleanor Weavell who were married on 2 Aug 1849. Rosa was the youngest of nine children, all born in Hobart. At one stage she was a probationary teacher. Rosa married Charles Edmund Smith on 27 Jun 1900 at St John's Church, Launceston. The couple had two sons: Brian Beresford (born 7 Jun 1909) and Charles Valentine (born 21 Jul 1911, died 20 Sep 1994). Rosa died on 20 Nov 1960 at the age of 89 and is buried at Carr Villa.
