George Horne was born in England in about 1829 and arrived in Melbourne in the early 1850s. He married Martha Kelly in 1856 and their six children were all born in Brunswick, Melbourne, between 1857 and 1868. Their son Charles died aged 16 in 1878. George became an accountant and in 1885 was engaged to review the management of the Bank of Tasmania. It was reorganised as the National Bank of Tasmania Ltd and George was appointed as chief manager. He also was chairman of the board of directors of the Mt Lyell Company. He lived with his family in a house attached to the bank in St John Street, Launceston. Martha died in 1894. In 1897 George resigned as bank manager but retained his seat on the board of directors. George died 12 Apr 1899 aged 70. A portrait of George painted by Gladstone Eyre was exhibited in the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92. See The Examiner 10 Jun 2006, p.34.
