Mrs Alice Eliza Holmes was born at Camden Passage, Islington, London on 16 August 1857, daughter of Thomas Ward Robinson and Mary Ann Iles. There were thirteen children in the family, ten of whom survived childhood. The family migrated to Australia when Alice was one year old and lived in Melbourne. Alice married Frederic Holmes on 26 Apr 1886 in the Wesleyan Chapel, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Frederic Holmes was the owner of Hatton and Laws Pharmacy for many years. Alice Eliza was the sister of Frederic Holmes' first wife Emma Letitia who died in 1882. Alice Eliza had come from Melbourne to keep house for her brother-in-law when his wife died. Frederic and Emma had five children, one of whom died in infancy.
Alice and Frederic had six children, all born in Launceston: Nellie, born 18 Feb 1887; Myra, 19 Feb 1888; Charles, 1889; Louis, 17 Jan 1891; Rupert, 11 Jul 1893 and John, 29 Jan 1901. The seven surviving Holmes boys were educated at the Launceston High School. Alice Eliza died aged 82 on 3 Oct 1939 in Launceston and is buried at Carr Villa.
