John Stuart Grange, known by his second name, was born in 1862, a son of Thomas and Jane Grange, of Akoroa, New Zealand. His twin brother Robert Burns is also in the Launceston Family Album. Stuart was 27 years of age when he married Ethel Elizabeth Ritchie at St Paul's Church, Launceston, on 16 Jan 1890. Elizabeth, born in Longford, was the eighth child of fifteen born to John Ritchie and his wife Elizabeth Kitson. Stuart worked as a representative for Buckeye Lowdown Reaper and Binder in Tasmania. His work took him throughout the colony on a regular basis and during his travels he photographed many aspects of the country. Stuart displayed a selection of his best photographs at the Tasmanian Exhibition of 1891-92 to great acclaim.
During the Exhibition his wife, Elizabeth, was confined and gave birth to their only child, John McKenzie (Jack) on 21 Mar 1892. The family moved to Sydney, NSW, shortly thereafter where Stuart died in 1895. Elizabeth returned to Launceston with Jack and remarried on 7 Nov 1901 to William Morley Glascott. She died aged 33 on New Year's Day 1904, leaving her son an orphan in the care of her family. Jack did his secondary schooling at Scotch College, Launceston. He married Lorna Gooch on 24 Dec 1912 at the Baptist Manse, Launceston.
