Charles Edward Gould was born on 7 Jul 1873, the second youngest of six children of Thomas Gould (1814-1879) and his third wife Maria Darling (1832-1878) who were married in Launceston in 1867. Charles was orphaned at the age of six. He was a bass in the Tasmanian Exhibition Choir in 1891-92 while his sister Alice sang alto. Several members of Charles' family are pictured in the Family Album: his sisters Elizabeth Steer and family, Jane Crossley, Alice and Grace Gould, and Joscelyne and Gladman family members. In 1894 Charles was employed at George Weymouth's wholesale and family grocer in Charles Street.
Charles married Florence White, the daughter of James Noel White and Emily Luscombe, on 15 Oct 1902 at West Devonport. They had one daughter Margaret Emily, born on 12 Aug 1914 at the Alexandra Hospital, Battery Point. Charles had a grocery store at 212 Main Road, New Town. Florence died at a private hospital and was cremated at Cornelian Bay on 21 Sep 1940. Charles was a widower for 21 years, dying peacefully on 12 Sep 1961. He was cremated at Cornelian Bay and his ashes were interred in the Independent Section G No. 11.
