Thomas Gladman was born in Launceston in 1845, the second child and eldest son of George Humphrey Gladman (1812-1870) and his wife Sarah Hay (c.1823-1901). He was educated at a school kept by Mr Connor. Thomas married Sarah Anne Gould in Launceston on 9 Sep 1869. Their two children were born in Launceston: George Thomas on 19 Jun 1870 and Ethel Sarah on 24 Apr 1872. Their portraits are also in the Family Album together with Thomas' sisters Annie and Alice.
Thomas began his working life at 15 years of age, gaining experience in mercantile firms before spending several years as an accountant to the solicitors Douglas and Collins. For 42 years Thomas was municipal treasurer in Launceston, succeeding his father to the position in Mar 1870 and retaining it until Mar 1912 when he resigned. He was also secretary to the Launceston Public Hospital Board from 1878. At the time of the Exhibition he was living at 53 Elphin Road, Launceston. Following his retirement Thomas lived in Melbourne for some years, before moving to Sydney. Thomas died in his 84th year at his daughter's residence in Mosman, NSW, on 2 Apr 1929. His wife Sarah died on 31 Sep 1923.
