This is possibly Thomas John Giles who was born on 25 Dec 1860, one of four children of Charles Giles and his wife Emma Stratton, nee Winsbury, who were married in Hobart on 16 Jul 1856. Emma died in 1865. Charles was an ex-convict from Bilsington, Kent, who had arrived in Van Diemen's Land on 2 Aug 1827 for smuggling. He was a shoemaker, and died in 1874 at the age of 76. Thomas was therefore orphaned at the age of 13. He had a boot importing business at 158 Charles Street, Launceston by 1892. He later moved to 96 St John Street and 106 Balfour Street. He played the bassoon in the Tasmanian Exhibition Orchestra in 1891-92.
