James Gaylor was born on 4 Jun 1838, the third of 10 children of licensed victualler Charles Gaylor and his wife Phillis Blythe who had married on 1 Apr 1833 at New Norfolk. James was christened at St David's Church in Hobart in Feb 1841. He prospected for gold at Mathinna (Black Boy), then in 1875 for tin at Weldborough (Thomas' Plains). James was a member of a party of six men, led by Renison Bell, who discovered good tin deposits at Thomas' Plains. They took out a lease called the Union Tin Mining Company which paid excellent dividends to shareholders. James was also involved in the development of the Anchor Tin Mine near Lottah in 1880. He moved to Launceston where he became a sharebroker and a member of the committee of the Launceston Stock Exchange. In 1903 he moved to Hobart where he died on 14 Sep 1907 at the age of 69.
