Arthur Douglas Gaunt was born on 16 Mar 1885, the youngest son of Edward Gaunt (1837-1904) and Emily Ransom (1845-1921). Both his parents and eight brothers and sisters are also in the Family Album. Arthur was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School.
Arthur was a bank manager at Harrisville, Queensland in 1913. When he joined the 5th Battalion 23rd Reinforcement as a private in 1916, he was a clerk in the Commercial Bank, Collins Street, Melbourne. He saw service on the Western Front and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. His next of kin was his mother Mrs Emily Gaunt who was living at 39 Miller Grove, Kew, Victoria. After the War he returned home and resumed his position at the bank.
Arthur married Phyllis Mary Matier in New Zealand in 1924. A son, Peter James, was born on 24 Sep 1927 at Kelburn, New Zealand. The family returned to Australia by 1933. Arthur was an accountant at Neutral Bay, NSW, before moving to Ascot, Queensland by 1936 where he was a bank manager. The family went back to Victoria. Arthur was still working as a bank officer in 1972. His son Peter became an industrial chemist and Edward John followed his father's profession in the bank. Arthur died in 1975.
