Henry French was born in Launceston on 11 Feb 1874, the eighth child of James French (1833-1928) and his wife Sarah Bushby (1835-1902). On leaving the Launceston High School, Henry entered the merchant's office of RS Scott. For over twenty years he was a partner of Mr WA Blackett in the financial firm of Blackett and French. On 13 Dec 1899 Henry married Alice May Cole Holmes, the daughter of Frederic and Emma Letitia Holmes. Their only child Ella Letitia, known by her second name, was born on 31 May 1901.
Henry was a keen bowler and musician and was a member of Paterson Street Methodist Church Choir. He also took an interest in the Launceston Competitions and orcharding at Richmond Hill on the Tamar River. He died of pneumonia at Mrs Anderson's Private Hospital, Caulfield, Victoria, on 26 Mar 1919 aged 45 and was buried at Carr Villa E217. His wife died on 22 Aug 1965 and was cremated.
