Mary Elizabeth Gertrude Fox was born at Horton College, Ross, on 20 Feb 1877, where her father, William Walker Fox (1837-1925), was the headmaster from 1863 until 1889. Her mother Emma, nee Currie, died in 1926. Mary was educated in Launceston at Dunira Girls' School and later at the Methodist Ladies College. She graduated from the University of Tasmania with a master of arts. In 1903 she became headmistress at MLC which became one of the largest and most esteemed girls' colleges in Tasmania under her guidance. She was a leader in women's hockey. She was awarded an MBE in 1941 for her contribution to education and women's sport. After her retirement she moved to Victoria and volunteered for the Women's Land Army. Mary died in Melbourne on 31 Aug 1962 and was buried with her family at the St Leonards Methodist Church. Her brother William is also pictured in the Family Album.
