William Richards Fox was born at Ross on 7 Mar 1875. He was the only son of William Walker Fox (1837-1925), headmaster at Horton College for over 26 years from 1863 to 1889, and his wife Emma Currie. William junior was named after his father, and his mother's godfather Rev. George Richards who was President of Horton College. He had two younger sisters, Mary, who is also pictured in the Family Album, and Florence Emma, who died as a baby.
William was severely limited in the physical activity he could undertake, as he suffered from epileptic fits. William attended Horton College from 1884, in which year he won a prize for Scripture, until his father's retirement. The family then moved to 'Maplestead', St Leonards. In 1890 William was enrolled at the Launceston Church Grammar School where he completed his education. On 23 Jan 1905 he drowned in the North Esk River at the age of 29.
