Harold Robert Evershed, known as Rol, was born on 16 Mar 1874 at Littlehampton, Sussex, England. He was the younger son of Alfred Evershed (1839-1912) and his wife Sarah Hannah Cockcroft (1839-1928). Harold married Lilian (Linna) Barclay, daughter of James Barclay, at her home 'Gartmore', Frederick Street, Launceston, on 14 Jan 1915. They had two sons, Harold Alfred Barclay born in 1917, and Thomas Ernest born in 1921. Thomas died aged 20 on 7 July 1941 at his parents' home, 175 George Street, from tuberculosis.

Harold Robert was apprenticed to WH Knight's Foundry where he learned the skills of pattern making and marine engineering. He was an exhibitor at the Tasmanian Exhibition of 1891-92 and won awards for his engineering drawings. He taught engineering at the Launceston Technical School, having earlier worked at the Duck Reach Power Station. He was part-owner of the riverboat Bass. He was a keen gardener and collector of small antiques, enjoyed outdoor life, music and woodworking. He died on 13 Oct 1958 aged 84. His funeral was held at Christ Church Congregational and he was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery. His wife Lilian died on 25 Dec 1975.
