Alexander Arthur Evans, known as Lex, was born on 3 Nov 1881, the eldest son of Alexander Evans and his wife Elizabeth Grace Groom. He was one of seven children born in Launceston. His father owned the Soap and Candle Works. He was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School. He joined the army, serving in three wars and receiving a DSO, Military Cross and Volunteer decoration. Rising through the ranks, he ended his career as a Lieut Colonel. He then took up farming, was also a public accountant in Launceston and held many secretarial positions. He established the accounting firm Evans and Garrott. Alexander was elected mayor of Launceston 1926 and a member of the Legislative Council in 1936.
Alexander married Gladys Jeanette Luttrell on 7 Jul 1910 at St John's Church, Launceston. Their first child Beverley was born at Devonport on 31 Dec 1910. Their two sons were born in Launceston: Alexander Lexican on 24 Aug 1913 and Francis Raymond on 3 Jul 1915. They had a second daughter June, on 19 Sep 1924. The children were given the surname Graeme-Evans. Alexander retired in Hobart where he died on 3 Jun 1955 aged 73.
