Mrs Mary Button was born about 1831, the second daughter of John Rout of Auckland, New Zealand. On 17 Sep 1857, at the Congregational Church, Davey Street, Hobart, Mary Rout married Charles Stammers Button, son of W Stammers Button, first mayor of Launceston (1853-1856). Charles was engaged in the brewing business with his father and later with Captain Ditcham. Marion, the eldest of their four children, was born in Launceston on 6 Jan 1860 and married William T Tucker in 1885. Charles and Mary and their young daughter Marion moved to Invercargill, New Zealand, where Edmund was born on 5 Feb 1864. The family came back to Tasmania where two more children were born: Percy on 15 Feb 1868 and Isabel on 17 Jun 1870.
The three younger children are also pictured in the Family Album. Charles exhibited aerated waters, cordials, liqueurs and bottled ales from his Ellesmere business at the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92. Mary and Charles celebrated their golden wedding anniversary just ten days before Charles died on 27 Sep 1907. Mary died aged 84 on 27 Feb 1915 and was buried in the Button family plot at the Charles Street General Cemetery.
