Mrs Mary Burbury was born in 1835, the elder daughter of Francis Abbott (1799-1883), formerly of Derby, England, who came to Van Diemen's Land in 1845 as a convict. Later he established a watch and clockmaking business in Hobart. He was also an amateur astronomer and meteorologist. Mary came to the colony in 1850 with her mother Mary Woolley (1800-1865) and five of her six siblings.
On 12 Nov 1857 Mary Abbott married Daniel Burbury, the eldest son of Thomas Burbury of Oatlands. She and Daniel separated and Mary came to live in Launceston while Daniel remained in the Midlands. He died in Nov 1895. Mary's sister Maria married Daniel's brother Alfred Burbury. After the death of Maria in 1871, Alfred took his young family to Launceston. Mary's nephews Francis and Harry Burbury, Fordham Abbott and niece Ada Burbury also appear in the Launceston Family Album. Mary died aged 74 at her residence 'Marieville' on 21 Oct 1909 and was buried in the family plot at Carr Villa, F 191. She did not have any children of her own and left all of her estate to the four surviving Burbury children.
