Francis Edward Burbury, born in Hobart on 8 Aug 1866, was a tailor and mercer at 98 St John Street, Launceston. He was the eldest of five children born to Alfred Burbury, the fourth son of Thomas Burbury of Oatlands, and Maria Abbott, the second daughter of Francis Abbott of Hobart. Francis' mother died soon after the birth of his sister Maria in Dec 1871, when he was five years old. The baby died the following Feb 1872, leaving Alfred with four young children.

Francis was an accomplished musician, keen horticulturalist and natural scientist. He was at one time president of the Launceston Horticultural Society. He played the flute in the Tasmanian Exhibition Orchestra in 1891-92 and in the inaugural concert of the Orpheus Orchestral Society in Jul 1892. He married Ada Cecilia Cleaver on 2 Jun 1888. Their two daughters were Madge Muriel born Feb 1891 and Phyllis May born Oct 1897. His wife Ada died in Dec 1940 and was buried at Carr Villa. She is also pictured in the Launceston Family Album. Francis died in his 90th year on 12 Nov 1955 at Wheatland Road, Malvern, Victoria.
