Alice Maud Boyd was born in Launceston on 3 Oct 1874, the fifth and youngest child of Thomas Boyd (c.1844-1913), a bootmaker, and his wife Ellen Forgie. Both her parents were assisted immigrants from Scotland. Thomas arrived in 1855 as a 13-year-old with his family on the ship John Bell and Ellen came in 1860 aboard the Antipodes. They were married at Launceston on 25 Dec 1862. Ellen died on 16 Dec 1898 and Thomas married Margaret Bishop on 28 Feb 1900. Alice was an alto in the Tasmanian Exhibition Choir in 1891-92. Her brother Henry, sister Mary, and future stepmother are also in the Launceston Family Album. Alice died in Goulburn, NSW, on 16 May 1900.
