Adam Craig Bell was born on 18 May 1853 in the village of Great Whittington, Northumberland, England, to William Bell and his wife Mary Tailford. He was a tailor and later a life assurance agent. He married Dorothy Rodham in 30 Sep 1876 in Collierly, Durham, England. They had seven children: Mary E., Isabella, Dorothy. Adam Craig, Joseph William, Sydney and George T.Their first child, Mary, was born in 1880. In Oct 1883 the family arrived in Sydney aboard the Ellora. They moved to Launceston about 1890 where Adam was appointed superintendent of what was to become the MLC Assurance Co. at 58 St John Street. Sons Joseph and Sydney were born in Launceston before the family returned to Sydney in 1893 where Adam was an orchardist in the Fairfield area. He was elected to the Fairfield Council and was mayor in 1901. He died in Yagoona, Sydney on 18 Aug 1945 at the age of 92. His brother-in-law, Jonathon Rodham, is the great-grandfather of Senator Hillary Clinton (nee Rodham) wife of former US President Bill Clinton. See The Examiner 21 Apr 2007, page 33.
