Samuel Burton Batty, known by his second name, was born about 1870 in Yorkshire, England. He was the second child of George William Batty and his wife Emma Clarke. He was sent away to school in Tavistock, Devon. In 1881, at 11 years of age, he was boarding with William Winney at Spring Hill, Tavistock. He had migrated to Tasmania with his family by Jan 1884 when his young brother Harold was born. He had a season ticket to the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92 along with his father and sister, Mabel.
Samuel, a warehouseman, married Ada Barrett on 23 Dec 1893 at St Mary's Church, Hagley. Ada was a daughter of Thomas Herwood Barrett of 'Westwood', Meander Rise. They were both 24 years of age. Their three sons were born in 1895, 1897 and 1909. Samuel Burton was a foundation member of the Commercial Travellers' Association and a keen sportsman. He was a member of the Tamar Rowing Club, the Tamar Cricket Club and the Nile Cricket Club. He died aged 76 in Hobart on 18 Sep 1945. Ada died three years later aged 79 on 25 Sep 1948.
