Jeannie Bateman was the second daughter of Thomas and Jane Bateman. She was christened on 8 Nov 1868 in Manchester, England. She arrived in Australia with her family on the Iberia in May 1884 aged 16. Jeannie took part in concerts in Launceston, including one at the Albert Hall in Sep 1895 in aid of the Launceston Benevolent Society. She returned to England to study at the Royal School of Music in London from April 1898 until 1901. She studied singing, piano, harmony, elocution, French and deportment.
