Charles George Bateman was born in about 1872 in Manchester, England, to Thomas and Jane Bateman. He arrived in Australia with his family on the Iberia in May 1884. He worked as a clerk in partnership with his father Thomas in their company T Bateman & Son, mining and machine agents. Charles was initiated into the Lodge of Hope in Aug 1892 at the age of 20.
