Mrs Isabella Susan Barnes was born on 9 Jul 1841, the daughter of William Stanley Sharland and his wife Frances Sarah Schaw from 'Woodbridge', New Norfolk. Isabella married William Barnes junior, a gentleman and philanthropist, on 2 Apr 1861 in St David's Cathedral, Hobart. They had four children: William, born in 1862, died five months later; a stillborn son in 1863; Edith, 1869 and Florence, 1871.
Isabella was involved in a number of ladies' committees in Launceston, including the Girls' Industrial School, the Queen Victoria Hospital and St John's Church. Her husband William died in 1898, shortly after they moved into their new home 'Nyllavert' in Tamar Street between York and Brisbane Streets. Isabella died on 23 Oct 1913 aged 74. She was buried at the Cypress Street Cemetery. See The Examiner 2 Jun 2007, page 47.
