Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Barclay was the eldest daughter of George Green Sherwin (c.1816-1888) and his wife Elizabeth Dean (c.1821-1895). Sarah was born on 22 Jun 1844 at Bothwell and married James Barclay in Hobart on 9 Apr 1874. She was the sister of Marianne Hurst, Lucy Propsting, Amy Gorlitz (the celebrated singer Amy Sherwin) and George Arthur Sherwin. Sarah and Lucy sang together in a production of Gounod's Faust in Hobart, probably about 1870.
Sarah and James had six children: Francis, 1875-1957; Leura, 1876-1878; Lilian, 1880-1975; Jessie, 1881-1975; Charles, 1882-1959 and Marjorie, 1889. Her husband and the four older surviving children are pictured in the Family Album. Sarah died on 6 Oct 1921 aged 77 and was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery next to her husband in Section E 49.
