Joseph Archer II was born on 27 Jan 1823, a son of Thomas Archer (1790-1850) and his wife Susannah Hortle (1801-1875) of 'Woolmers', Longford. He trained in agriculture on farms in England, returned to Van Diemen's Land in 1842, and ran the 'Fairfield' property. Joseph married Ann Weston, daughter of William Pritchard Weston and his wife Ann Dubrelle Clark on 28 Dec 1852. Joseph and Ann had nine children between 1854 and 1871.
Joseph was a merino sheep farmer, director of the Launceston and Western Railway Co., justice of the peace 1862, president of the Northern Agricultural Society, trustee of the Launceston Church Grammar School, patron of the Longford Racing Club and member of the Legislative Council. He died on 3 Jun 1914 and was buried in the family vault at Christ Church, Longford. His daughter Aimee Parker is also in the Launceston Family Album.
